grey days

This morning we had a powdering of snow in Chelsmley Wood

the south of England has had two dry winters and is beginning to run out of water already for the coming summer.

weight wise I am having a blip
not enough exercise and going up and down around the 160 kg

I have been busy with an hour and a half on line at Solihull Central Library with http://ancestrylibrary.proquest.com/ see Ancestry Library Edition
which ProQuest has partnered with MyFamily.com to create Ancestry Library Edition, one of the most important genealogical collections available today with unparalleled coverage of the United States and the United Kingdom and now Canada too. Its valuable content is a strong complement to HeritageQuest Online
distributed by ProQuest Information and Learning I used a draft email in google mail to take notes of LAPHAM in Canada

With two buses each way I got home quite exhausted and so am making slow progress with updating my master database for the LAPHAM one-name study

I in particularly am beginning to work with

Digital postcards from a mobile phone

BBC NEWS Technology
"I wanted to be able to send friends and family a series of 'digital postcards' in near time - accounts of our holiday that people were able to read while we were still away, rather than a week after our return as is often the case with the traditional postcard . . . . .."

I have not got this - USA only I think

As I walked through the dark and spooky tunnels by Newhall Street canal locks, I found myself at the foot of the 152 metre Birmingham BT Tower which I can see from my kitchen window

the world's largest canal system, the Birmingham Canal Navigation

- even now around 150 miles of canal exists between Birmingham and Wolverhampton. It is much easier to get at than was the case in 1980, largely because of Birmingham City Council's support for the canal's recreational use and the efforts of it and of the BCN Society in making improvements. The canals are the responsibility of the British Waterways Board.

I left the towpath at the Cambrian Wharf

and headed for the Birmingham Wheel by Symphony Hall

after about 2 hours footing it, I was glad to catch the buses home.

a more ambitious walk

The Grand Union Canal runs for 147 miles from Paddington right into the heart of Birmingham. As it links the two biggest cities in Britain it was a major transport link before the coming of the railways, although nowadays it is almost exclusively used by pleasure craft.

Urban Fusion Eastside Light Festival: "The main theme of the Urban Fusion Eastside Light Festival, which runs from 10-26 February is 'Celebrating the Past; Sustaining the Future '.

Eastside, Birmingham's largest regeneration project, was chosen by the European Lighting Designers' Association (ELDA+) to host the festival because of its rich heritage of industrial buildings and surroundings .

The festival was preceded by a series of workshops in Birmingham run by ELDA, their first in the UK. The workshops were headed by six internationally renowned designers. The workshop technical co-ordinator was Martin Lupton of Building Design Partnership Lighting from London.

Birmingham City Council is supporting the Urban Fusion Eastside Light Festival because it believes that improved urban lighting schemes contribute to an improved environment for citizens and visitors. Urban Fusion is the two year programme of events featuring a diverse range of arts and performance, focusing on the physical regeneration of Birmingham and the region's living environment."

manja was cold and tired

Manja was cold and tired and after shopping at the open air market, we had two and a half hours to spend window shopping until her off peak West Midlands Centro bus pass was valid

from where we sat the late afternoon light was on Selfridges on the third floor of the Birmingham Bullring shopping mall.

the new east Birmingham is growing visibly

I love this suspended glass roof

then down and out over the old bridge to the Pallisades shopping mall

looking north with the BLING of the shiny metal of New Street Odeon sign

Northern Grit

Pat Maycroft I had to go to Solihull to collect Bristol Trade Cards a book on inter-library loan

By chance I found myself at opening night on Thursday 2nd February from 6pm – 8pm of the photo exhibition Northern Grit by Pat Maycroft

The photographs that form the ‘Northern Grit’ exhibition by Pat Maycroft are about discoveries, contemplations, memories and histories of a forgotten world.
thank you for the enjoyable glasses of wine

The images provided the writing group ‘Vane Women’ with inspiration for their creative writing and extracts from their resulting poems are presented alongside the photographs that are on display. Vane Women: Northern Grit

The exhibition runs in the gallery at Solihull Arts Complex from Monday 30th January – Tuesday 7th March and everyone was welcome to come along to the opening night on Thursday 2nd February from 6pm – 8pm.

To compliment the exhibition, the Vane Women writing group will be running a day of creative writing workshops at Solihull Arts Complex on Saturday 11th February from 2.30pm – 4.30pm.

There is also an opportunity between 1pm and 2pm for people to join Vane Women as they read their work aloud. Solihull Council - Press Releases
